Student Work
“Synth Scores” (from ART 383 at UMBC, Fall 2021)
Assignment: Students learned the basics of synthesis and audio effects using Ableton Live. In small groups, they found a short video on the internet and then created a “score” using synthesizers in Ableton Live. Then they shared projects with the others in the group and made remixes, adding/removing elements from the other scores. This was a fun project to introduce students to synthesizers without needing to know anything about music: they focused on gesture and timbre.
Podcast Project (from ART 383 at UMBC, Fall 2021)
Assignment: In pairs, students created 5-8 minute long podcast episodes. They could be informational/researched conversations, like this work example, or a radio play with sound effects and voice acting. This project built on the previous project (a sound collage of an imaginary audio scene) and allowed students to practice writing a script, recording, and mixing voices in their work.
Ephemeral Film Redesign (from ART 383 at UMBC, Spring 2021)
Students found a short public-domain ephemeral film on archive.org and removed all the audio, then added their own sound effects and dialogue back in. This project let them practice recording foley in the studio and also ADR/looping to get matched dialogue with actors on screen.
Animation Loop (from ART 383 at UMBC, Fall 2020)
My UMBC students are frequently enrolled in another class that has a final project needing sound design, so I let them propose their own project (with its own progress deadlines and rubric) for the final project. This was an animation student’s “loop” final project for the class.
